To:
Honorable Mayor Glenn Singer &
Town Council Members
From:
Alexander Diaz,
Town Manager
Subject:
Resolution No. 2170.11 – Recognizing May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and May 15th through May 21st as National Police Appreciation Week in Golden Beach.

Recommendation:

It is recommended that the Town Council adopt the attached Resolution No. 2170.11 as presented.

Background:

In October of 1962, Congress passed a new law designating May 15th of each year as PEACE OFFICERS MEMORIAL DAY, when the entire nation is called upon to pay homage to these dedicated men and women in the law enforcement profession who have been killed in the line of duty

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial reports that the total number of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty since our country declared its independence has reached 19,203 as of April 20th.  That number includes 743 in Florida, and of those State of Florida deaths, 127 died in the line of duty in Miami-Dade County.  Fortunately, Golden Beach has not suffered a Police Officer line of duty death in the Town’s eighty-two year history.

It is recommended the residents and Town Council of Golden Beach honor the memory of those Law Enforcement Officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice by giving their own lives while in the line of duty – and in furtherance of their commitment to keep others safe; by issuing this proclamation. The proclamation recognizes both May 15th as National Peace Officer Memorial Day and May 15th through May 21st as National Police Week.
Fiscal Impact:   None
