About the Police Department

The Police Department is budgeted for twenty-six (26) members; a Chief, a Captain, a Lieutenant, three (3) Sergeants, and twenty (20) Officers, along with three (3) non-sworn members. The Department is also authorized to employe up to six Part-time / Reserve Officers. In addition to uniform patrol, specialty services include: ATV Beach Patrol, Bicycle Patrol, Detective, Honor Guard, K-9 Patrol, Marine Patrol, and Drug Strike Force. The patrol fleet consists of all Ford Explorers, several recently equipped with laptop computers.

Requirements and Selection Process

Golden Beach Police Officers Applicants must be either employed in a full-time sworn classification by another police agency or honorably separated within the preceding 48 months. Officer applicants must be Florida certified or must have participated in an “equivalency of training course” and successfully completed the State of Florida certification examination prior to applying. Applications are reviewed through the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Automated Training Management System (ATMS) for certification, the Florida Crime Information Center (FCIC/NCIC) for a criminal history check and the Florida Driver And Vehicle Information Data (DAVID) system. Qualified candidates are invited for a structured interview with a three-person interview board. Conditional offers of employment are made based upon the assessment of a candidate’s application and interview score. Upon successful completion of the Psychological Evaluation, Polygraph Examination, Background Investigation, and Medical Assessment and Drug Screen, a formal offer of employment will be extended.

Compensation Package

The Salary Range for Full-time Officers is $43,260 to $61,801. Officers work a five-day week (4-10s on the Late Shift). The Town provides all but $50 a month for paid health insurance for officers, 50% health insurance for the officers’ families, and 100% paid life insurance (year’s salary). The municipal pension provides a 3% multiplier with vesting at ten years (officers can purchase up to five years of previous police service), and a Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP). The current Collective Bargaining Agreement provides Take-home Vehicles for Sergeants and Officers serving in specialty positions. New Officers receive 10 Vacation Leave Days, 12 Sick Leave Days, Compensatory Leave, Overtime, and 9 regular Holidays and 3 floating holidays per year. Officers also receive uniforms, equipment, and a firearm & holster. On their employment anniversary date each year, senior officers receive longevity pay of $300 at 3 to 5 years, $1,000 at 6 to 9 years, $2,000 at 10 to 14 years, and $2,800 at 15 + years. Officers receive Specialty Position Compensation (Pay or Take-Home Vehicle) and also Educational Incentive Pay of $750 for an Associate’s Degree, $1,250 for a Bachelor’s, and to $1,500 per year for a Master’s Degree. Officers also receive $725 per year clothing allowance including shoes. The Off-Duty Officer’s Rate is $35 per hour for the Officer with a 4-hour minimum.

HOURS: Part-time volunteer position, 8-hour shifts, some weekends and holidays. 24-hour operation. May be called in for emergencies or to accommodate staffing requirements.  

SALARY: $15.00 ph

DESCRIPTION: Responsible work of a general law enforcement nature with primary emphasis on the protection of life and property, the enforcement of local ordinances, and state and federal laws. Duties include road patrol, incident resolution, public assistance, and report writing. Reserve Officers will wear a uniform and safety equipment provided by the department and must work in all types of weather conditions.
