Councilmember Kenneth R. Bernstein is the Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Turnberry Associates, a national real estate company which has managed and/or developed more than 7 billion dollars in commercial and residential properties. Since 1994, Mr. Bernstein's responsibilities have included financing matters; negotiating loan commitments; sales and acquisitions; contract and lease negotiations; land use matters; eminent domain work; and overseeing during that time an entire legal department. He has assisted the financing department in obtaining and negotiating billions of dollars worth of construction and/or permanent loans for regional malls, hotels, office buildings, self-storage facilities, strip centers, condominiums, and businesses. Additionally, he has helped oversee the entitlement and development process on several projects.
Mr. Bernstein is a member of the Florida Bar and a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Florida, as well as a licensed Mortgage Broker. A native Floridian, he earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Miami (1992), and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Florida (1987). Prior to joining Turnberry, he was an accountant with Deloitte, Haskins and Sells in Miami, Florida. He later became an associate with the law firm of Buchanan Ingersoll in Aventura, Florida. Additionally, he has owned and operated and managed various businesses including a title company, several retail operations and currently is redeveloping a commercial property in Las Olas, Florida. Since 2004, he has served as a Board of Director for Great Florida Bank, a NASDAQ company with 1.7 billion dollars of assets as of March 31, 2009.
An active member of the South Florida community, Mr. Bernstein serves as Vice-Mayor for the Town of Golden Beach. He was recently chosen as a Board Member for Aventura Hospital. Additionally, he has been involved in numerous charitable and civic activities in Miami-Dade County including: serving on the Board of Directors of Aventura Jewish Center, committee member of South Florida East Coast Coalition, fundraising committees for United Way, and a member of the Dade Advisory Board of Extra Helpings and Daily Bread Food Bank.
